Spring and summer are rapidly approaching, which means it’s almost time to put on your swimsuit and jump into the pool. Millions of people view swimming as a fun and relaxing activity, but it can also be dangerous. Protect yourself and your loved ones at the swimming pool by following these safety tips:
Never leave a child unattended.
Over 200 children drown in backyard swimming pool accidents every year. If there are children swimming in your pool, never leave them unattended even if you think they are skilled swimmers and will be safe on their own. Adults can watch children from the sidelines, but if there are toddlers or infants in the pool, an adult should also be in the pool within arm’s reach.
Follow safety regulations.
Property owners have a legal obligation to ensure no one is injured in their swimming pools. The California Swimming Pool Safety Act requires property owners to install at least one of seven swimming pool safety features. Some of these features include a fence, wall, or swimming pool blanket that covers the entire surface of the pool.
Dive safely.
Many swimming pool accidents happen when children or adults attempt to dive into the pool. Before you dive, make sure you check the depth of the pool to ensure you are not diving into the shallow end. You should also go feet-first instead of head-first to prevent tragic brain injuries, and ask all other swimmers to move away from the diving board so you don’t collide with anyone when you jump in.
Learn life-saving skills.
If you and your family spend a great deal of time by the pool, it may be wise to take everyone to a CPR class. Knowing how to perform CPR on both children and adults will prepare you to jump in and assist those in need after a swimming pool accident.
Stay away from drains.
Pool drains may look harmless, but if your hair, clothing, or jewelry gets caught in a drain, you may be pulled underwater until you can free yourself from the suction of the drain. Before you jump into a swimming pool, check to make sure that each drain has a cover. If a cover is loose or broken, you should fix this issue before allowing people to swim in the pool.
