Not all brain injuries are equal

Everyone in California understands that brain injuries can be devastating, but new data shows that people are affected differently by similar brain traumas. People of color are up to twice as likely to die from brain injuries as white people. This shocking figure has led researchers to look at underlying disparities in medical care for people of color in the U.S.

Looking at the figures

The study comes from Oregon Health and Science University. From 2006 to 2017, over 6,000 patients at the hospital were treated for brain injuries. Among people of color, 14% of patients with that kind of injury died. White patients had much better outcomes; their overall the rate of death was just under 10%.

Understanding the disparity

The authors of the study considered the possibility of bias in care, but they found no evidence of any such bias. Instead, they point to social problems that are more likely to affect people of color. For example, people of color may be less likely to have health insurance and access to regular care. They may be affected by food deserts and have a worse overall diet than white people before their injury.

It’s been speculated that disparities like this may be seen with other injuries and diseases too. Only more investigation will uncover the overall disparities in health care in the U.S.
